So, we are now nearing March and I am going to post this article again to review. A fair amount of people fall of the resolution bandwagon by mid February for varying reasons. If you have fallen off, it’s okay. Just get back on and start again.
Spend some time and evaluate what happened that caused you to derail.

Some common questions to ask….

Did you find it too difficult? Did you set your goals too high? Did you have the support you needed?

Try to narrow it down and make a new plan. Reread this article for guidance.

Enjoy!

The New Year is quickly approaching; most people are beginning to set their resolutions. Year after year, many people flounder and then become disheartened over the fact that they didn’t achieve what they set out to do. There are a variety of reasons people miss the mark on the goals they set, but generally the underlying cause is a lack of careful planning to ensure the goals are realistic and attainable. This article is about making a NEW PLAN. Face it, your previous plans haven’t worked or you wouldn’t be reading this article to begin with.

So, what is the SMART principle and how do we apply it?

SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed.

Specific– As clear and defined as possible! Stating you want to lose weight is too broad. A better approach is to look objectively at how much weight you want to lose and when you would like to complete this goal.

Measurable– There are several tools to draw upon to “measure” our progress. The way our clothes fit, climbing stairs without becoming winded and of course, tape measures, skin calipers, body fat calculations and the scale.

Attainable– Is this goal attainable within your time frame? Take a tough, realistic hard look at the goal you have set. You need to be completely and brutally honest with yourself. Saying you want to lose 20 pounds by the end of the month, is unattainable and unrealistic. Do you have the will power and dedication to go it alone? If not, hire a Personal Trainer. They will ensure you achieve your goal, monitor your food so you are getting necessary nutrition, design specialized work out programs to fit your needs and support you 100% of the way. Statistically, people have higher success rates when they have hired the “right” trainer.

Realistic– This is where some more hard work comes into play. Looking back at “attainable” we have decided that the drive, will power and motivation are in place but are your goals realistic. Simply assuming you can lose 20pounds in one month is not realistic nor is it healthy.  Based on some of the research part, you have discovered that exercise and diet play the large role but you must set realistic milestone markers.

Timed– Setting a time frame for accomplishment helps keep us on the path! Setting a realistic and measurable time will help you Attain! When setting a timeline for your goal, consider all of the variables that might impact your progress, such as the complexity or difficulty of your goal, your current status and capabilities, and how much time you have to devote to the achievement of this particular goal.

As you’ve noticed, each topic is intrinsically tied in with the others for the overall principle.

In short, you need to objectively (Realistically, Specifically) look at what your goal is, decide when you want to accomplish it,( Measurable, Timed)  and then plan to achieve it (Attainable)

Now, let’s take a look at some wonderful side effects of healthy lifestyle changes. Use them for motivation to remind you why you are wanting to make the change and to keep your determination to accomplish your healthy choices!
